FMCSA – Temporary Waivers for CDL and Medical Cards
FMCSA has issued temporary waivers for drivers who CDLs, CLPs, operator’s license, and/or medical cards are going to expire after March 1, 2020. This waiver is effective immediately and will be valid until June 30, 2020. This waiver has been put in place due to DMV and clinics closed due to COVID-19.
Drivers must keep their license and/or medical cards with them along with the waiver to show they are qualified to drive the commercial motor vehicle. This waiver does not apply to a license or medical that expired prior to March 1, 2020. Motor carriers need to be staying in touch with their drivers about their health and be sure nothing has come up recently.
FMCSA also issued an Enforcement Notice, explaining the terms of the waiver and how it will be enforced. Motor carriers need to know individual states do not have to accept this waiver in the absence of expired CDLs or medical cards. Some states have issued their own extensions for license expirations.
