Revisions for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-9
On January 31, 2020, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a notice for a new version of the I-9 Form. The new form has some changes of instructions and to the form itself.
Employers may use the prior form with the version date of 07/17/2017 until April 30, 2020. Starting May 1, 2020 employers will be required to use the newest form with the version date of 10/21/2019. The version date can be found in the lower-left corner of the form.
Clarifications have been made for who can act as an authorized representative on behalf of an employer. Updates were made for the USCIS website addresses, DHS Privacy Notice, and the process for requesting paper forms of the Form I-9. There are also clarifications made for what documents are acceptable for Form I-9. These are all instructions that have been updated in the new version.
Revisions to the County of Issuance field in Section 1 and the Issuing Authority field in Section 2 have been made. Name changes to certain countries have been updated as well but will only be seen in the fillable pdf version of the Form I-9. These are the changes that have been made to the form itself.
